I've sometimes gone back and read that scene with Inchinori with a certain pleasure. I always think of it as Lady Dainagon's invention more than my own. His weakness is spiritual pride. She smells it out with a poet's insight and she just cuts him down to size in a poetic manner without ever using her blade against him. I always think of that as spiritual combat. What I'd give to write another scene like that. I hope that stuff isn;t behind me.

Garce Garceushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11160407485298015371noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7396437919069310850.post-29014275299551100412013-11-16T22:38:19.350-05:002013-11-16T22:38:19.350-05:00Donna - let me be blunt. Your post is definitely opening up the erotic possibilities here. I've been meaning to write some more stories with a Japanese setting, but it's been hard to get inspired. This might just nudge me!Donnahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13615190390845433428noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7396437919069310850.post-78960851166214040562013-11-16T05:36:50.681-05:002013-11-16T05:36:50.681-05:00I never get tired of this story (Color of the Moon...I never get tired of this story (Color of the Moon), Garce. Meanwhile your account of its genesis (and rebirth under Mire Uno's tutelage) offers much for us writers to ponder.

I've often thought that the scene with Ichinori and the birds is perfectly distilled horror, as the former lover of birds, so certain of his own sanctity, finds himself gleefully slaughtering what he loves. I also have tried my hand at stories set in and about Japan, and sure, I lived there and studied the language for longer than I'd like to admit, but there still remains that gap a writer needs to cross in portraying a different culture. I think the cultural gap can spur us on in good ways--to pay attention and appreciate detail and rise to challenge, as you have done, for example. I also have deep gratitude to the many Japanese friends who have helped me understand their culture on a deeper level--it's such a generous thing to do. Coincidentally, one of my dearest friends is an Uno as well, from Kyoto, though :-).Donnahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13615190390845433428noreply@blogger.com
